Once you Start its Hard to Stop- Smoking

I see “no smoking” zone at many places but still smokers standing there. “Is it so that smoking kills”? And “still most of us want to get killed”? “Why smoke”? “Is it that more important than life”? “People say they smoke just to feel normal”!! . There are many such questions that trouble my mind.

Smoking is where a substance, most commonly  tobacco, is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. Smoking can be done by cigarettes, pipes, cigars, hookahs and vaporizers too. They start smoking for fun and just get used to it . It can be peer pressure or your own wish to do it. “They say live life king size but when u are a smoker you can just live it cigarette size”. Smoking was part of this world back in 5000 BC in shamanistic rituals. Many ancient civilizations, such as the Babylonians, Indians and Chinese, burnt incense as religious rituals. Smoking in the American countries probably had its origins in the incense-burning ceremonies of shamans but was later adopted for pleasure. So it is basically from America that we were introduced to it as a social tool.

Smoking regularly poses great danger to not just your life but also those around you . For cigarette lovers all I would advise is to smoke only occasionally. There are so many diseases that are caused due to smoking. Most are curable but there can be severe cases of them too. Many of the diseases are vascular stenosis,  lung cancer, heart attack  and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. That’s why people say it’s just so much easier to not start smoking at all. Many governments are trying to deter people from smoking with anti-smoking campaigns in mass media stressing the harmful long-term effects of smoking.  Passive smoking, which affects people in the immediate vicinity of smokers, is a major reason for the enforcement of  smoking ban.

This is a law enforced to stop individuals smoking in indoor public places, such as bars, pubs and restaurants. The effects of addiction on society vary considerably between different substances that are smoked and the indirect social problems that they cause, in great part because of the differences in the enforcement of narcotics legislation around the world. Despite of many bans still in many countries some of very harmful substances are still being used that causes addiction to smoking.  People begin smoking for a variety of reasons, but after their health deteriorates, they often want to quit the habit. Since the substance used in them, for example nicotine, is a habit forming drug so quitting it can be a great challenge. Mood swings are also a change noticed in chain smokers. If a pregnant woman is a chain smoker then she is also risking her child.

The person who wants to quit smoking has to be first mentally prepared for this as quitting is a tough task. It gives us some time to adjust to the idea of being a non smoker. The first step to quit smoking is to prepare yourself for it mentally. The idea of being a non smoker does not come easy on most smokers. Most tobacco smokers start from adolescence. The presence of high-status models and peers may also encourage smoking. Smokers say that smoking helps in controlling stress but after research on this issue it was discovered that a smoker’s stress is higher than a non smoker. Most adults who had started smoking in their teens never expected to get addicted to it. Smoking can shorten your life by 10 years or more. The habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year too. Despite of all the bans posed on it, still,  illegal consumption of tobacco is prevalent . Today, we’re more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. But still many of us don’t want to quit it since we are much addicted to it .

Artificial smoking substances available in the market too are not good for health. Smoking done for pleasure is not just posing risk for oneself but other passive smokers too. Passive smokers infact, suffer most despite having nothing to do with smoking. Smoking “just one cigarette” can lead to another and another and soon, you’re back to smoking a pack a day. Although the urge to smoke lessens as time goes on, it’s imperative to resist the urge to light up even one cigarette.  Though the packet of cigars, cigarettes etc display a warning statement yet people pay little heed. Smokers should find an alternative solution for dealing with stress, which is one of the biggest relapse triggers for ex-smokers. Go for a brisk walk, practice deep breathing or learn to meditate. If you’re teetering on the brink of having a smoke, call a friend to help you out .

I am not the first one writing an article on this issue. There are thousands of articles on this issue. Awareness campaigns are being organized too but still people seem to ignore issues of such major importance.  The smoker is not only risking his/her life but also of those around him/her. There is a need to understand that you have no right to pose danger to others lives. Today, I did my part of raising my voice against smoking. Would you too?
